Dominating your market always begins with understanding your customer better than anyone else. So, you need to do what it takes to understand your customers’ searching behavior. Although it may sound obvious, you need walk in their shoes as much as possible and try to understand the nature of the keyword research they are doing.

By better understanding the nature of their problems through the keywords that they are searching for, you have the ability to provide a tailored message to help them get the results they want. Once you have an idea of the needs of your customer then you are ready to follow the steps listed below and get the edge you need.

  • How will you track conversions? Sometimes this can be obvious, tracking happens when you make a sale. However, suppose that you don't sell anything tangible? In cases like this, you will likely be tracking leads and so you will need to assign a value to them. Once you do, you can better determine how much to spend on advertising.

  • Learn to use autoresponders. An autoresponder is basically automated e-mail. They are a simple way to establish contact with your customers and stay in touch with them easily and automatically.

  • Do proper keyword research

  • Once you have your core group of keywords, you will need to group them by the type of customer they are targeted towards. For instance, if you are a mortgage broker, you will have a different conversation for someone who is looking to refinance their home versus someone who is purchasing a home for the first time.

  • Create targeting landing pages for each type of customer. Think of your website like a department store. For instance, if I was searching for men's shoes, I wouldn't be interested in women's jewelry. In the same way, you should consider building unique landing pages on your site for each type of customer you have.
  • Set up a Google AdWords campaign based upon the keywords you have selected, group them by similar themes and customized landing pages

  • Monitor and test your AdWords campaign EVERY DAY. To do this effectively, you should be split testing your ads everyday, adjusting your bid prices up or down and removing poorly performing keywords from your campaign

  • After some time has passed, you will begin to come up with "money keywords" which are the ones that bring in the most sales or leads. Once you discover what these terms are you need to begin an aggressive search engine optimization campaign for them. Some things you cado would be...
